Therefore what the prophets said or preached is the same as what they wrote. Reading and hearing the Word of God, then, are considered of exactly equal value. In Luke 16:29, the brothers of the feasting rich man are commanded to “listen to Moses and the prophets.” They were unable to listen to Moses and the prophets, however, because they had died several centuries earlier. Therefore they are being sent back to open the writings of Moses and the prophets. Consequently, to read the writings of Moses and the prophets is to listen to Moses and the prophets.
