Therefore, when in articles of faith and theological conclusions, arguments are sought from the decrees of popes, statues of councils, statements of the fathers, custom of the Church, etc., we must consider these to be not from primary but from secondary and lesser principles on which one must pass judgment according to that only and proper principle of theology. You see, they have no strength from drawing conclusions, except to the extent that they are in harmony with it. If they differ from it, all power to conclude dies completely in them.
