How is it that a man such as David could so firmly adhere to God’s Word until his death It was because he could say: “If Your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. … How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:92, 103). The Word of God had been like a sweet, heavenly honey to him. How could the holy apostles have held so unshakably fast to Christ’s doctrine before the whole world’s wisdom and threatening power? It was because all of them could say with Peter, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that Your are the Holy One of God” (John 6:68-69). They had experienced the power of Christ’s doctrine in their very souls, rather than just understood it with their minds. Finally, how is it that all true Christians have not allowed their faith in the holy Bible to waver? It is because they “have tasted the goodness of the word of God” and the “powers of the age to come” (Hebrews 6:5) that lie in it. It is because the Holy Ghost testifies in them that the “Spirit is truth,” that is, that the Word of the Bible, this Word of the Spirit, is the truth from God.
